Unlike most Ideas sets, which must attract 10,000 votes to be considered for official release, 40912 Sea Serpent has come about as a result of a contest titles ‘A Twist of Nostalgia!’. Builders were asked to reimagine a beloved LEGO set from childhood with modern elements.

“The Black Knights return in this rebooted 6057 Sea Serpent,” wrote HallowedBrick02 when they submitted their creation. “This reimagination features new functionality with workable rudders, a cargo hold below deck, and a modular stern, allowing for safer storage of high-value cargo.”

Their take on the set was chosen as the winning model, then it was adapted by professional LEGO designers to become the gift with purchase set that will be available soon. The finished set features a fabric sail, moving rudders and a cargo hold.

It follows a trend in recent years for modern takes on classic sets that has included 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle, 40601 Majisto’s Magical Workshop, 40567 Forest Hideout, 10497 Galaxy Explorer, 40580 Blacktron Cruiser and 10355 Blacktron Renegade.

Ideas has much more on the way – a huge slate of fan-designed sets have been announced for the next two years, including Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Downton Abbey, Ramen, Vintage Sewing Machine, E.T. The Extra-terrestrial, Smurf Village and La Catrina.
