The LEGO Group will release Amsterdam Canal Houses, a slice of life model that pays tribute to the waterways of the Netherlands’ capital city.
Get ready to jump on a bicycle and tour the waterways of the bustling city of Amsterdam! There are more bikes than people on these streets and now some LEGO ones are adding to that number as Amsterdam Canal Houses is becoming an official LEGO Ideas set.
As the Amsterdam merchants made their fortunes with the rise of the East India Trading Company, they helped expand the city by building the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals during the early 1600s. Now the mansions are a World Heritage sight that are instantly recognisable due to the colourful exteriors and towering windows that stretch across over four storeys.

Built as a tribute to the colourful capital, Brickmaster_85 submitted the canal build to the LEGO Ideas platform and thanks to architectural enthusiasts, it made it to the 10,000 votes required to be considered for review. Since then it has been under consideration by the LEGO Group for release as an official product, alongside the record-breaking 146 entries within this review.
Amsterdam Canal Houses focuses on daily European life in a street scene set by the canal waters. There are five buildings, each with a slightly different architectural style, that are either homes or businesses. A typical brownstone is located on the corner offering bicycles to rent – one of the most common ways for locals or tourists to travel around the city.
“On the ground floor there is a typical café with a wooden counter. The owner is personable and will welcome you with a smile,” says the fan designer, who has invented charming personalities for the current selection of minifigures. “Then there’s a painter working in his studio, a Dutch hipster with a smile, the bartender, a fashionable man in a pink cap and a gentleman intent on reading his book.”
