Watch the trailer for the live action LEGO Friends musical

The LEGO Group has unveiled the trailer for LEGO Friends: Heartlake The Musical, the first live action story inspired by the long-running theme.

Remember the LEGO Friends live action musical special that was announced last year? Well it’s still happening – and there’s a trailer to prove it. LEGO Friends: Heartlake The Musical will premiere on the LEGO YouTube channel on October 16.

Following its debut on YouTube, the special will then be available on streamers including Netflix, Peacock, Tubi, RTL and AMC Networks in select markets.

LEGO Friends: Heartlake The Musical sees Daisy (Jada Langley) moving to a new place and needing to find a sense of belonging. A bit of magic sends her into the world of Heartlake City where she finds herself interacting, singing and dancing with live action interpretations of the Friends mini-doll characters that children know and love.

Kenny Ortega is executive producing and came up with the story, bringing credentials from Disney’s High School Musical and Descendants franchises.

The special will feature four original songs, which the LEGO Group promise will be conveyed through “spectacular performances, dynamic choreography and cutting-edge virtual production technology.” The actors and dancers will be performing in a massive live-action world inspired by Friends sets.

In ‘Better Dancing Alone’, Daisy sings an emotional song about the freedom she feels when building with LEGO elements. In ‘Heartlake Glow’, the Friends cast sings and dances at The Unicorn Cafe as they reveal the legend of Old Man Heart and why they must fight to save the Tree House.

‘Why Waste a Wish’ is a ballad in which Daisy and Leo take a boat ride around Heartlake City while they sing about their special bond of friendship. In ‘Chase the Stars’, Daisy and Paisley sing a powerful duet as the characters come together to save the Tree House from being torn down.

It looks to be a sincere and straightforward take on a children’s special – it will be interesting to see how that connects with audiences in a post-The LEGO Movie era.

There will be opportunities in select locations for fans to either watch LEGO Friends: Heartlake The Musical on the big screen or engage in promotional activities. Experiences will take place in Canada, the Czech Republic, Poland, Mexico, the UK, Netherlands, Türkiye and the USA.

In the UK, London’s Potters Field will host a life-sized Unicorn Café. The time-limited experience is “inspired by one of the musical’s most magical locations.” It’s likely to be a photogenic spot with a few creative activities for visitors to get involved with. It will run from October 29 until October 31.

“As a lifelong believer in the power of music and storytelling, this project has been a joy to be part of,” says Executive Producer Kenny Ortega. “Together with my long-time creative partner Paul Becker, and the talented innovators at Final Pixel, we’ve built a world that feels full of wonder, heart and possibility.

“What I love most is that beneath all the spectacle, Heartlake The Musical is a story about finding your people, embracing who you are and discovering that you can achieve incredible things when you support one another. Which is true to the LEGO Friends universe!”

“Creating our first-live-action musical is a major milestone for LEGO Friends and an exciting evolution of the storytelling experiences we can bring to our fans,” says LEGO Senior Vice President, Global Entertainment Partners & Content Jill Wilfert.

“At its heart, Heartlake The Musical celebrates the power of imagination. Alongside the original music and spectacular performances, it brings the creativity inherent in the LEGO brand to life, showing girls that they can build far more than models, they can build stories, friendships, possibilities and positive change.”
