The LEGO Group to release Star Wars / Marvel crossover sets – designed by fans

Fans who have been salivating at the idea of Iron Man coming helmet to helmet with Darth Vader will be delighted by the news that LEGO Star Wars / Marvel crossover sets are on the way.

Back in August, Lucasfilm and Marvel announced a limited five-issue comic book series that will bring the Star Wars galaxy and the Marvel Comics universe together for the first time. Inspired by the unique collaboration, the LEGO Group will release three crossover sets between the two themes in 2028.

That’s not all though – LEGO fans will be coming up with the ideas for these new sets. Using the LEGO Ideas platform, fans will be able to submit models that will then be reviewed by the LEGO Group and voted on by fellow users. The winning designs will become official LEGO sets, adapted by professional designers.

There are three streams for fans to build in – scenes, characters and vehicles. Each stream will see one design emerge victorious to be delivered as an official retail model, for a total of three models.

Builds are limited to 3,000 bricks and the Star Wars content that the LEGO Group wants creators to focus on is A New Hope, the 1977 original. The deadline to submit is November 12.

This is fans’ chance to imagine what would happen if Luke Skywalker clashed with Thanos, if Black Widow were to take command of the Millennium Falcon or if R2-D2 hijacked Stark Industries. There has never been a LEGO Ideas challenge quite like it.

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the limited series, is part of the celebrations to mark 50 years of a galaxy far, far away. Nostalgia fiend Kevin Smith is the writer and comic book stalwart David Marquez is the artist. Marvel Comics have been publishing Star Wars books since 1977, when the first issues preceded the release of A New Hope.

In the original story, the events of Star Wars start to unfold on Earth after a spell shatters reality, leading the Marvel heroes – and villains – to leap into action.

“This challenge is a milestone for LEGO Ideas and our fan community,” says LEGO Senior Vice President and Head of Product Group Fede Begher. “For the first time ever, fans can build with both Marvel and Star Wars in a single LEGO Ideas challenge, unlocking entirely new possibilities for creativity and storytelling. We know our fans never stop imagining new ways to bring their favourite worlds together, and we’re excited to see the originality, passion and innovation they bring to this unique crossover.”

“As fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga,” said Kevin Smith when the collaboration was announced. “So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand!”
