A chat about weird and experimental LEGO sets

Graham E. Hancock (Editor of Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine for fans) and Daniel Konstanski (author of The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks) have a conversation about some of the weird and experimental LEGO sets they remember. Any set that deviates from the typical minifigure LEGO play model is fair game.

There have been some unusual LEGO sets through the years, so Graham E. Hancock and Daniel Konstanski sit down to talk about some of the most memorable – and some of the strangest. The conversation is sparked by the new LEGO Icons set, 10351 Sherlock Holmes: Book Nook, which introduces a new format for adults that is also delivered in 76450 Book Nook: Hogwarts Express and 10367 The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook.

They talk about entire themes that saw the LEGO Group trying something different or experimental, including BrickHeadz, Games, Racers and NEXO KNIGHTS. They also talk about the unique Star Wars set 75392 Creative Play Droid Builder.

“The board games were so much fun because they embraced the idea of LEGO building – you had to build the entire board game before you played through them,” says Graham.

“The thing that was really unique to me was that they sold them in different places. I remember seeing them at the grocery store in the board game section,” Daniel recalls.

The pair of fans go on to talk about an often forgotten and rather strange theme called LEGO Racers. “I don’t think anyone at the LEGO Group was envisioning Racers becoming this multiyear huge success,” says Daniel. “And this was at a time when they were throwing everything against the wall to see what would stick.”

During the conversation, Graham and Daniel talk about the nature of experimentation and the approaches that the LEGO Group has taken to unorthodox products.
