The Secret Life of LEGO® Bricks: The First Official Book for Adult Fans of LEGO®: The Inside Story of a Design Icon

4.6 out of 5 stars (138)

Building the ordinary into the extraordinary – brick by brick.

This first official book for Adult Fans of LEGO® takes the reader on a visually stunning journey from the very earliest hollow bricks to the complex shapes and building techniques of today.

LEGO bricks are design icons and marvels of engineering. Virtually unchanged for over fifty years, the brick is still at the very centre of LEGO’s ethos: each brick connects to every other brick, allowing the construction of almost anything you can imagine. LEGO minifigures may be the friendly faces of the LEGO world, but bricks in all their different shapes and forms are its very foundation.

The Secret Life of LEGO® Bricks explores the brick’s rich history in full colour and unparalleled detail. Granted unprecedented access by the LEGO Group, Daniel Konstantski has interviewed design masters, element testers and the so-called ‘rock stars’, the set designers, to reveal for the first time how and why new LEGO bricks are made.

This is the book the fans have always wanted: a truly behind-the-scenes look at the story of the beloved LEGO brick and the company which makes it, with a wealth of exclusive visual material from the LEGO Archive in Billund.

Daniel Konstanski is a passionate, lifelong LEGO fan and the author of The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks, the first book published by the LEGO Group for Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs). Thanks to a collaborative working relationship with the team of in-house historians employed by the LEGO Group Daniel has been privileged to tell many stories from within LEGO Group itself and is considered one of the most knowledgeable and authoritative voices in the fan community on the company and its products. Along with the book, he has written hundreds of articles in his role as the US Editor for Blocks Magazine covering every aspect of the hobby. His dream job is to join the team of historians and be even closer to his favorite place on earth: The Vault in Billund where every LEGO set ever made is housed.

When he is not tinkering on his latest LEGO project, rushing to meet the next never-ending Blocks Magazine deadline, or sorting more bricks down in the basement for the above mentioned, Daniel works as an environmental engineer and enjoys hiking, rock climbing, and bike riding with his wonderful wife and three kids on the trails near their home in Delaware. He is also a regular on the east coast LEGO fan convention circuit.

Incredible detail nicely laid out and well worth the price. However, I found it difficult to read as it's over 300 pages of, for me, uncomfortably small type and rather heavy hence only 4 stars.

The topic of the book is very interesting, sadly they went for a hard to read layout. This could be a good book but is ruined by however was responsible for the font setting/layout design.

Hopefully this will be rectified in later edition but for now I can't recommend this book as it no pleasure to read due to the font size used.

There is so much thought and planning in the creation of Lego sets which starts right down at the mathematics of brick dimensions. I haven’t been able to put it down. It’s a text book on everything that has to do with the creation, philosophy, cultural responsibility and how to keep the market demand. Pictures are gorgeous.
