10 years of LEGO Fan Media Days: The early years

LEGO Fan Media Days is about to happen at LEGO headquarters in Billund, Denmark, for the 10th time – so Blocks is looking back to see how the event has evolved through the years, as attendees have seen secret projects and learned brick secrets.

In just a few days, journalists, fan, video creators and influencers representing a magazine, websites, YouTube channels, TikTok accounts and more will gather in Billund, Denmark, the home of the LEGO headquarters for the 10th edition of LEGO Fan Media Days.

It’s three days of product reveals, presentations, interviews and hands-on activities so that the media present can bring their audience closer to what goes on behind the curtain at the LEGO Group.

Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine for fans, will be there! As ever, Blocks will be working overtime to bring readers closer to the LEGO Group and provide real insider access.

This will be the 10th year that Blocks has attended the event – so Blocks Editor Graham. E Hancock (author of LEGO Star Wars: The Force of Creativity) joins Build Expert and Historian Daniel Konstanski (author of The Secret Life of LEGO Bricks) to talk about every LEGO Fan Media Days event so far.

They share stories, reminisce and talk about how it has evolved through the years. In this first conversation, they discuss LEGO Fan Media Days in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

LEGO Fan Media Days started in 2016 with a focus on BIONICLE and Technic. It was a small event, with only those two product themes and NEXO KNIGHTS represented! There were also opportunities to interview representatives from Rebrick, Ideas and LEGO House (which was still under construction at the time).

Since that first event it has grown massively, with more media attending, more presentations and many more product reveals. Graham and Daniel chart the growth and evolution of LEGO Fan Media Days over the past decade.

For the 2017 event, LEGO Ideas unveiled 21310 Old Fishing Store – the first time a sheet was whipped off a LEGO set at Fan Media Days.

In 2018, LEGO Fan Media Days hit the big time, with an appearance from CEO Niels B. Christiansen as part of a launch event for 42083 Bugatti Chiron, the epic Technic set that deserved a lot of fanfare.
