The LEGO Group announces Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord set

It’s morphin’ time! LEGO Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord is going to be a reality, allowing fans to build their own massive mech and minifigure team of teenagers with attitude.

Children of the 1990s were dazzled when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit screens in 1993 and became a huge success around the world. Now, 32 years later, Ideas has announced than an official LEGO Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord is on the way.

Talented builder Truman Cheng crafted a version of the Megazord digitally and submitted it to LEGO Ideas, where another 10,000 nostalgic Power Rangers fans voted for the concept. The LEGO Group has assessed the concept and decided it’s a go goer – so now it is being adapted by professional designers for an official release.

Truman’s concept focuses on the Megazord. In the show, the Power Rangers would call on their zords when things got tough, then when necessary would combine them to become the towering Megazord.

The five mechs that combine to become the Megazord are Mastodon, Pterodactyl, Triceratops, Saber-tooth Tiger and Tyrannosaurus. It is reminiscent of 21311 Voltron, another LEGO Ideas mech that could split into smaller robots.

He also proposes that the set should include the five core Power Rangers from the original run –     Zack the Black Ranger, Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger and   Jason the Red Ranger – although fans may wonder if the set can really do justice to the show without either Green Ranger or White Ranger Tommy.

The original series of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was produced by Saban Entertainment, using a mix of newly shot footage with a US cast and stock footage from Japanese shows Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, Gosei Sentai Dairanger and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger.

Each week, Rita Repulsa (and later Lord Zedd) would send an alien being to attack Earth and, under the tutelage of Zordon, it was up to the colourful crew of teenagers to stop them. When the characters are ready to transform into their suits, they declare: “It’s morphin’ time!” and are ready for action.

The show ran for three years before the show shifted to different iterations of the Power Rangers team.

A huge range of toys, manufactured by Bandai, were available alongside the show, giving children action figures of the Power Rangers themselves, their alien adversaries and their zoids to collect. Role play items were popular too, replicating the super team’s weapons.

In 2018, Hasbro acquired Power Rangers, then earlier this year announced that Hasbro Entertainment and 20th Television would be producing a new live-action Power Rangers series for Disney+. Hasbro has partnered with the LEGO Group on several products in recent years, including 10358 Transformers: Soundwave and 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale.

The LEGO Ideas Megazord set is likely to launch in 2026 or early 2027. Five more sets have been announced alongside this one – E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Downton Abbey, La Catrina, Ramen and Smurf Village. Three more, Daft Punk Concert, The Old Man & The Sea and The Golden Girls have been put into the Parking Lot for further consideration.
