Free LEGO 40976 Prosperity Lion will kick off 2027

Fans will be able to get a new Chinese New Year set very soon as 40976 Prosperity Lion will be the first free LEGO set of 2027.

The LEGO Group is kicking off 2027 with a free set – as long as you spend enough money on bricks (and that is usually easy when a new year’s product launch happens), you’ll get 40976 Prosperity Lion for free.

It will be free with select purchases at LEGO.com from January 1, 2027. It’s a 411 piece set. No price threshold or end date has been specified yet, but you should be ready to act fast so you don’t miss out.

The build recreates the classic lion dance costumes worn by performers during Chinese Spring Festival celebrations.

40976 Prosperity Lion is a symbol of luck, strength and happiness. You can place either a wish for health or a wish for wealth onto the little included scroll, then attach it to the lion’s mouth or by its side. This Spring Festival decoration stands at more than 14 cm tall (5 inches), so it is ready to spread good fortune while sitting on your desk or a shelf.

The lion dance is a traditional type of performance that is believed to bring good luck. In Chinese mythology, the lion is an auspicious animal. They are usually performed by two dancers in a lion costume – one controls the head and front limbs and the other controls the hind legs. Their costumes also match the lion, so their legs and feet double as the lion’s paws.

There are two main styles of lion dance, one associated with the north region and another associated with the south region. The southern style is based on a lion’s behaviour, so features scratching, shaking the body and playing with a ball. The northern style is inspired by kung fu and involves wrestling, leaping and jumping between performers. Either the way, the dance is usually accompanied by gongs, drums and cymbals, as the loud noises are believed to scare off evil spirits and negative energy.

With its red fur and white trim, 40976 Prosperity Lion appears to be inspired by the better known southern style, with dramatic and stylised masks based on Chinese opera costumes, as well as wide, expressive eyes and big ears.

Although the price threshold for this free LEGO set hasn’t been announced yet, there are plenty of Chinese New Year LEGO sets that you could consider getting. For even more prosperity, then there’s the pair of golden carp in 80120 Prosperity Carp Leaping or 40864 Fortune Master, inspired by Caishen, the Chinese god of wealth. Another option is 80121 Ancient Moon-Gazing Inn – it recreates stories from the Song Dynasty with Su Dongpo, who was a famous poet, calligrapher and scholar from that period.

With the next Spring Festival fast approaching, it’s also highly likely that there will be new LEGO sets announced in time for the celebrations.
