LEGO Ideas 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures – the Blocks review

There’s a new gift with purchase set available at LEGO.com and it’s channelling Classic Space! Is 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures worth spending big for?

Here’s the important part that you’ll want to know – LEGO Ideas 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures is going to be free at LEGO.com between June 15 and June 22 when you spend £150 / $150 / €150. If the supply runs out before then, you’re out of luck – so it makes sense to order sooner rather than later.

This is one of those LEGO Ideas sets that doesn’t go through the typical Ideas process. Fan designer Ivan Guerrero won a contest with his concept, then the LEGO design team responsible for promotional and exclusive products adapted the model for this gift with purchase set.

It’s an absolutely charming build, set in a space-loving child’s bedroom. Adorably, the child minifigure has built themselves a rocket ship from cardboard boxes and who knows what else. Perhaps even more delightful than the rocket is the mech that the kid has built for their teddy bear.

What the model captures is the deep love of things during childhood. For many adult LEGO fans, the brick inspired other interests – and the clear implication here is that the child is inspired by LEGO Classic Space. A fantastic new torso print features 497 Galaxy Explorer and a stickered flag features 493 Space Command Center.

This is a touching tribute to way that a LEGO theme can capture our hearts as children, so it’s a must-have if you grew up with the brick.

SCORE: 67
VERDICT: This set will have special appeal for fans of LEGO Classic Space.
