LEGO Editions announces new Formula 1 helmet sets

LEGO Editions is branching out into the world of Formula 1, releasing two helmet sets based on Scuderia Ferrari HP drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

LEGO Editions has revealed two new Formula 1 sets for a May 1 launch:

The first LEGO Editions sets recently launched on March 1, a licensed FIFA set, 43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy, and an unlicensed football set, 43019 Football. The new theme is (as of right now) operating as a sort of ‘LEGO Icons for Sports’ (though not 18+) and any speculation of whether or not it would branch out from football has now been quelled.

Helmet sets first started cropping up in LEGO Star Wars in 2020, with a launch wave of three sets that included 75277 Boba Fett Helmet. The Helmet Collection has since become a staple of the theme and has been gradually creeping into others — LEGO Marvel Super Heroes has its own fair share of helmet sets, and LEGO Icons just released its first, 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron’s Helmet, also on March 1.

LEGO Editions is now jumping on the helmet train, doing so via the LEGO Group’s partnership with Formula 1, which began last year during the racing juggernaut’s 75th anniversary season. These new F1 sets are both based on the Scuderia Ferrari HP team, featuring the helmets of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

43014 Scuderia Ferrari HP Charles Leclerc Helemet comes in Rosso Corsa, the iconic Ferrari colour. All details are printed — no stickers here — and include Charles’ driver number and the sponsored branding that litters drivers’ attire. Based on the initial images, things seem to be pretty standard for a helmet set, everything from the typical size to the black stand with plaque are here. One surprise for Star Wars and Marvel fans in the house will be the inclusion of a minifigure (those who purchased 11373 The Lord of the Rings: Sauron’s Helmet will be less shocked). While it’s unlikely this trend will make its way to the galaxy far, far away, it’s nice to see a minifigure included for fans of the racers.

43022 Scuderia Ferrari HP Lewis Hamilton Helmet is much the same, using almost the exact same number of pieces, falling just two short. This helmet in the Modena yellow colour and has an equal number of printed details, this time personalised for Lewis Hamilton. He, too, gets a minifigure counterpart that fits comfortably on the stand for display.

“As a fan of the sport I am delighted to reveal these two sets coming to all Tifosi and fellow fans soon,” said Senior Model Designer John Ho. “It was an absolute pleasure to get to work on these sets with a team of fellow passionate and talented designers. The unique curves and intricate details from the helmets presented a fascinating opportunity, and our team worked passionately to ensure every aspect was captured. Seeing them come to life, in a new scale, in Melbourne in the hands of two of the best drivers in the world is such a proud moment for the whole team.”

F1 fans are likely to be happy with the continued collaboration and it’s nice to see LEGO Editions branching beyond just football so quickly. Whether any future sports being added to the theme is a question best left for another time, as LEGO NIKE is comfortably its own thing and no other licenses with sports organisations are currently held. But there’s always a chance—and of course the opportunity for more collectors’ sets based on football and F1 is there as well.
