2008 saw the LEGO Group release sets based on the hit animated TV show, Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the first time. Since then, LEGO fans have had the opportunity to amass many sets and create their own Republic and Separatist armies. Blocks, the magazine for LEGO fans, picks the six best Clone Wars sets to build up an imposing Separatist army full of droids.
Not only is 9515 The Malevolence one of the best Clone Wars sets, (find out why here) but 9515 is the only Separatist capital ship ever made by the LEGO Group. While 9515 is a specific ship from the first season of Clone Wars, a few modifications can transform The Malevolence into a more generic Separatist warship. A strong droid army is going to need large ships like 9515 The Malevolence, especially if they want to stand a chance against Republic ships like set 8039 Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser.
8086 Droid Tri-Fighter
A strong army not only needs giant ships like 9515 The Malevolence, but smaller more nimble fighters to engage in aerial combat and dogfights. Look no further than 8086 Droid Tri-Fighter. Unlike ships of the Republic, which are all piloted by clone pilots, all Separatist ships are droids themselves. 8086 features glaring red eyes and a total of four basters for maximum fire power. The battle droids included stand out due to their non-standard colour scheme and jetpacks.
Sets like 9515 and 8086 are perfect for space battles, but 7678 Droid Gunship is different in that it can do battle in space as well as on the ground. In fact, 7678 Droid Gunship is armed to the teeth, and boasts seven canons positioned throughout its wide disk-like shape. Its most powerful features are its many bombs that can be dropped from underneath it, which makes 7678 Droid Gunship ideal for bombing runs on enemy troops and vehicles. Like 8086, this ship is a droid, though a battle droid can be placed inside of 7678 to act as a pilot.
One of the earliest The Clone Wars sets ever made, 7681 Separatist Spider Droid is a solid choice when deciding what sets to build for your own droid army. A variety of droids are included – you get one B2 Super Battle Droid, one Battle Droid, as well as a single Battle Droid Commander. The spider droid itself features two cannons, though no firing projectiles. The clones included in this set are a nice touch but swapping them for more droids would make 7681 Separatist Spider Droid more desirable as a droid army building set.
The best AAT released by the LEGO Group, 8018 Armored Assault Tank (AAT) is one of those Star Wars vehicles that is a must have for any droid army. Its three B2 battle droids are unique, in that they each have a blaster arm. These droid variants can only be found in a total of two LEGO sets, which makes them even more desirable. Two regular battle droids are included to pilot the vehicle and man the turret. This AAT’s most impressive feature is its size, which the newer 75283 Armored Assault Tank lacks. You can learn more about set 75283 Armored Assault Tank and why it makes Block’s list as one of the worst Clone Wars sets, here.
7670 Hailfire Droid & Spider Droid
Released the same year as 7681, 7670 Hailfire Droid & Spider Droid shares many similarities with this other Clone Wars set. Every droid minifigure present in 7681 is repeated in 7670, though another plain battle droid is included here. The dwarf spider droid can be amassed in large quantities, as can the Hailfire droid, whose flick fire missiles make for great play value. The variety of droids and affordable price (it was only $20!) make 7670 the best Clone Wars set for building up a droid army.
