The best LEGO Star Wars: The Clone Wars sets

With more LEGO Star Wars: The Clone Wars sets on the way, we pick out the best sets based on the series so far

Way back in 2008, Lucasfilm launched the first Star Wars animated series in decades with a movie. Star Wars: The Clone Wars arrived on the big screen as well as the small screen, and had a massive product launch to support it. During its subsequent five seasons, which have of course been followed up by two ‘extra’ seasons, The Clone Wars took fans deep into the galactic conflict.

That also means that the LEGO Group has had plenty of material to mine for LEGO sets. Since that big 2008 launch, dozens of sets inspired by The Clone Wars have been released. Here, we pick out six of the best…

6 – 8098 Clone Turbo Tank

Released in 2010, 8098 Clone Turbo Tank retailed for $119.99 and contained 1,141 pieces. 8098’s footprint is absolutely massive and dwarfs all other Clone Turbo Tanks released by the LEGO Group. Atop ten giant wheels rests the tank itself, which contains interior space for gear, equipment, and minifigures. 8098 also includes a small walker, which is actually one of the better scaled AT-RTs that the LEGO Group has released. The heroes included are Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano and Aayla Secura, as well as two Clone Troopers. But the villainous Cad Bane steals the show as he only appeared in a total of three sets.

5 – 7676 Republic Attack Gunship

LEGO Republic Gunships are some of the best Star Wars ships adapted to the brick, so it only makes sense that 2008’s 7676 Republic Attack Gunship makes it onto this list. Retailing for $119.99 and containing 1,034 pieces including five minifigures, 7676 packs in the playability, detail, and overall coolness of being a gunship elevate this set above others. Being a gunship, there’s room for two pilots and gunners, as well as a large area to place minifigures inside – 7676 excels when it comes to playability. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Commander Cody, a Clone Trooper and Ventress offer a unique assortment of characters.

4 – 8039 Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser

8039 Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser is a fantastic set, and the LEGO Group hasn’t made another Republic capital ship since. Featured not only in The Clone Wars but also Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, 8039 remains sought after by Star Wars fans. The more you look at 8039 though, the more the gaps all along the ship become noticeable. It sold for $119.99, contained 1,170 pieces and five minifigures including Chancellor Palpatine and a pair of blue senate guards.

3 – 9515 The Malevolence

9515 The Malevolence is an underrated set from 2012. At $119.99 with 1,092 pieces, 9515 marks the first and only time there has been a Separatist capital ship from the LEGO Group. Not even the Invisible Hand from Episode III has been released as an official set. The Malevolence, featured in the first arc of The Clone Wars, was special in that it had a massive ion cannon which is represented by flick fire missiles here. Gapping is minimal and it looks great on display. Besides the two Battle Droids needed to pilot the ship, the four other minifigures are all icons of the series. Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, General Grievous and Count Dooku are all included in this set.

2 – 7964 Republic Frigate

2011’s 7964 Republic Frigate is one of the best Clone Wars sets made. At $119.99, the box contained 1,015 pieces and five minifigures, with four of the five exclusive to this set. While movie versions of Quinlan Vos and Yoda have been made, this is the only place you can get Eeth Koth, Commander Wolfe and a Wolfpack trooper. The ship itself is well detailed, featuring some interior space, a cockpit, removable escape pod and carrying handle.

1 – 10195 Republic Dropship with AT-OT

At number one we have 10195 Republic Dropship with AT-OT. Released in 2009, it retailed for $249.99, consisted of 1,758 pieces and included eight Clone Trooper minifigures. 10195 is often regarded as the greatest Clone Wars set of all time, and arguably one of the best LEGO Star Wars sets of all time. You get two separate vehicles that are not only able to act independently but can be used together too. Loading up your AT-OT with your clone army and dropping it off into battle with the Republic Dropship is the ultimate play experience. 10195 is also packed with detail and great for display – in fact, this 12 year old set still holds up to today.

Just when you thought The Clone Wars over, 2021 will bring us two brand new Clone Wars sets, 75316 and 75310 to add to the collection. Do you agree or disagree with this list? What are your top six sets? Let us know on social media!
