The sets that inspired LEGO Star Wars 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack

Blocks picks apart the new 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack to see what past LEGO Star Wars sets inspired it.

Battle packs and the Clone Wars have gone together since the beginning. When battle packs first hit shelves in 2007, it was with 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack and 7654 Droids Battle Pack. These two sets became instant classics, and their success spawned a collection of sets that’s been going strong for more than 15 years.

75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack isn’t just another army builder — it’s a celebration of past battle packs and what made them great. Every part of 75372 is connected to a piece of LEGO Star Wars battle pack history, and Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, is going to the front lines of the Clone Wars to find every set that inspired the new 2024 battle pack.

7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack

It shouldn’t be a surprise that 75372 draws inspiration from the first ever Clone Trooper battle pack, 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack. But 75372 goes one step further than simply taking inspiration — it reimagines each part of that original set for the modern day. The minifigure lineup is nearly identical, with a Shock Trooper and regular Phase II Clone Troopers. The only difference is that the 327th Star Corps Trooper in 7655 is substituted for a standard trooper in 75372. While it is a little disappointing not to the figure remade, the inclusion of another standard trooper is never something to complain about.

When it comes to the included speeder and turret in 75372, both are clearly inspired by 7655; the original set’s builds are some of the most iconic battle pack builds to date, and 75372 does a good job of redesigning them while still capturing the spirit of the original builds.

7654 Droids Battle Pack

75372’s similarities with 7654 Droids Battle Pack come in the form of the STAP and minifigure lineup. The STAP builds in the two sets are incredibly similar — a testament to the excellent design in 7654. The new set does modernize the build a little bit, but largely holds true to the original, even using the same build for the handlebars and blaster cannons.

In terms of figures, 7654 does include more Battle Droids, but the sets share a similar lineup — specifically with the three Super Battle Droids included in each. Both sets are the first appearance of a new Super Battle Droid variant — 7654 introduced the modern colour scheme and 75372 features the first ever update to the core mould.

75036 Utapau Troopers

The last main piece of 75372 is the Tri-Droid, which first appeared in 75036 Utapau Troopers in 2014. The two versions share similar core builds but are visually distinct, with the older using a grey and tan colour scheme and the newer using grey and dark blue. 75372’s more angular legs give it a much more striking presence compared to its predecessor. The new model also includes brick-built laser cannons on top of the flick-fire missiles to further improve its detailing. Where other parts of the set can be evenly compared with the older versions, 75372’s Tri-Droid is a clear improvement in every way.
