LEGO City has been on the toy store shelves for 20 years, so Blocks is marking the occasion in Issue 132 of the LEGO magazine with three special interviews. Design Master Henrik Andersen tells the story of how a fire truck model he built set the tone for the new theme and shows it off, Senior Model Designer Bjarke Lykke Madsen explains how he designed 2005’s 7237 Police Station then Design Manager Ricco Krog discusses taking City way beyond the urban sprawl.
Design Manager César Soares has created the largest ever LEGO Star Wars set – Ultimate Collector Series 75419 Death Star, a set of truly epic proportions. He talks about the process of crafting such a mammoth model, including some of the unique challenges he faced, and describes some of the set’s easter eggs. There’s even a peek at the original sketch he made when he embarked on the design process.
Rachael Easton may not have gotten her hands on 9,000 elements for one project, but she did have access to the enormous brick store during her internship in LEGO design. She reveals what it’s like to actually live the dream in Billund, Denmark and shares her perspectives on getting a taste of the dream job.
Thorsten Bonsch built an epic model inspired by The Elder Scrolls Online and it is full of interesting techniques that you can incorporate into your next project. The builder discusses the creation and highlights some key features that are definitely worth paying attention to.
This month’s Quick Builds – each one with full instructions – are a chibi take on the Black Pearl (also known as 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship), a tiny version of DC Batman 76300 Arkham Asylum and a modern spin on Exo-Force 7711 Sentry. With parts lists available, you can order the bricks, follow the steps and have a little model for your desk – or the beginning of a bigger build…
You can also learn the story of aquabricks – an unreleased LEGO system that was designed to be a fully modular water play concept. It would have been different, it would have been messy… but it looks like it would have been fun too!
Elsewhere in Issue 132 of Blocks, the monthly magazine for LEGO fans, you’ll find a classic advert for the Yellow Castle, amazing MOCs influenced by Asia, the story of a brick-built marble run and much more. It’s 116 packed pages.
