Blocks magazine recently celebrated 10 years in print and as we move into our second decade, we’re looking to expand our crew with new roles and new opportunities.
As Blocks grows our website and social media presence, we’re looking for enthusiastic, driven self-starters to work with us. We’re looking for people who will work with our Editor and Publisher to create the content we need for different platforms.
Whether your specialisation is in writing, editing images or in creating fun video content, if you love LEGO bricks and want to expand our brand with us, then we want to have a chat!
Much of what we’re building will be from the ground up, so you’ll have a lot of scope for exercising your creativity, but with the support of experienced LEGO content creators. You don’t need to have much experience – as long as you can deliver the standard we need to a deadline, we’re interested in hearing from you.
If none of these roles sounds look a good fit for you but you’d like to work with Blocks, email graham@blocksmag.com anyway and outline your skillset (plus share any portfolio samples that will help us). We’ll see if there are any areas where you might be able to get involved.
REVIEWS WRITER

We’re looking to expand our stable of reviews writers for the magazine. So this is an opportunity to get sent LEGO sets! But – no matter what anyone tells you, there’s no such thing as ‘free LEGO’. If you’d like to be a Blocks reviews writer, you need to be able to write compelling LEGO reviews. The reviews need to be well written and objectively assess the quality of a LEGO set from an adult fan perspective.
You will also need to be able to photograph LEGO sets to Blocks magazine standard. That means a pure white background and a well-lit model. Take a peek inside the magazine if you need a steer on what this means!
Note that while we try and match reviews writers with topics they are interested in, everyone has to take a mix of LEGO sets; you will find yourself reviewing sets you would otherwise buy for yourself, as well as sets that you might not usually buy for yourself. We’re looking for someone who is flexible and fine with that.
If you’d like to join the reviews team, then you’ll need to email in explaining a bit about your LEGO fandom with a writing sample (if you don’t have one, you could write a review of a LEGO set you have built recently) and photography samples. If you’re successful, you’ll be able to see your reviews laid out in print, as you can see above!
WEBSITE WRITERS

We’re looking for fast, fun content for the Blocks magazine website. This is a great opportunity if you want to flex your writing skills, have an excuse to write about LEGO topics and love sharing what you know about the LEGO hobby with the world.
You’ll need to meet deadlines, come up with great content ideas and write compelling articles that LEGO fans will enjoy reading.
This is a great opportunity if you don’t have much experience yet and would like to get into the groove of writing for a deadline. While we will be looking for you to pitch content ideas, we’ll also be there to support you with ideas and guide you in the types of topics we’re looking for.
If you’d like to join the website writing team, then you’ll need to email graham@blocksmag.com, explaining a bit about your LEGO fandom with a writing sample (if you don’t have one, you could write 500 words about a topic of your choice).
BUILDERS

We have small builds in the magazine that we call ‘Quick Builds’ – these are models that have just 12 steps and result in a pleasing little LEGO model.
We’re looking for builders with top build skills, top photography skills and the ability to meet a deadline to produce small but high-quality models for Blocks and create the 12-step instructions for them. The builds are on varied topics – they won’t just be your favourite things, they’ll vary from month to month.
Regarding photography, we need the build steps on a pure white background and a well-lit model. Take a peek inside the magazine if you need a steer on what this means! (Digital steps could be an option and is open to discussion).
Quick Build is just the beginning and there’s scope to get involved with other build guides and content for Blocks. If you’re interested, email graham@blocksmag.com with some examples of your builds (especially small builds that would be relevant to Quick Build).
VIDEO CREATORS

We’re looking to share fun, inventive LEGO video content on our Instagram channel and to build our TikTok channel. If you love making videos and sharing your passion for all things LEGO, then get in touch.
This could be a great fit if you love creating content but would like the support and sounding board of a team behind you – instead of trying to build an audience alone, you’ll be part of a bigger brand and won’t be shouldering the entire burden yourself.
There is a lot of scope for exercising your creativity here. If you’d like to be part of the Blocks content creation team, email graham@blocksmag.com with a bit about yourself, some content ideas that the LEGO community would love and links to sample videos if you have them.
