LEGO Voyagers puts a brick twist on cosy co-op

The LEGO Group has announced LEGO Voyagers, a new co-op game coming to Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC.

LEGO Voyagers, a co-op experience made by the team behind LEGO Builder’s Journey, Light Brick Studio, is coming to all major gaming platforms. The new game appears to share a lot in common with LEGO Builder’s Journey, with similar graphics and level layout. But the focus with LEGO Voyagers is the co-op aspect — something that wasn’t present in LEGO Builder’s Journey.

The best part about LEGO Voyagers’ co-op is that only one player has to own the game. LEGO Voyagers will come with a ‘Friend’s Pass’ that can be shared with another player to allow them co-op access. In the old days of couch co-op, only needing one copy was standard, but with the rise of online gaming, this feature is a very welcome addition, especially after LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga neglected online co-op entirely. Couch co-op will also still be an option for LEGO Voyagers, and with its tight level design the annoying split screen that plagues the mainline LEGO video game series hopefully will not be an issue.

The premise of LEGO Voyagers is similar to LEGO Builder’s Journey: Two friends head out on an adventure to save an abandoned spaceship and have to deal with increasingly wacky obstacles on their travels. The game will place significant focus on the value of friendship and teamwork — fitting themes for a co-op adventure.

General gameplay is expected to be like LEGO Builder’s Journey, with a nonverbal narrative unfolding across many level stages that come with puzzles asking gamers to engage their reasoning, platforming and building skills. Only this time, there will be two players present to work through each challenge. And the human-like characters from LEGO Builder’s Journey have been swapped out for single LEGO bricks each with a printed eye.

The choice to make the player characters single 1×1 bricks means that players will have a bit more freedom with moving around the levels and building — it appears that players will be able to build directly onto the characters and tumble freely around the levels, a contrast to the more rigid movement system in LEGO Builder’s Journey.

LEGO Voyagers seems to be trying to capitalise on the success of not just LEGO Builder’s Journey, but also many other modern cosy co-op games, a la It Takes Two and Unravel 2. Though LEGO Voyagers certainly carves out its own space in the genre, finding a mix of open levels and side-scroller thanks to the level design introduced in LEGO Builder’s Journey.

The game is set to release on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC on both Steam and the Epic Games Store. This will be a digital-only release on all platforms.
