LEGO Fortnite Expeditions introduces co-op, hero-based missions

LEGO Fortnite Expeditions has landed as a new co-op, PvE experience in LEGO Fortnite, available now for free to all Fortnite players.

The latest addition to the world of LEGO Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Expeditions sees players team up in squads of up to four hero characters to fight against AI enemies with the help of powerful hero classes.

Similar in concept to Fortnite’s original Save the World mode, the new LEGO Fortnite Expeditions mode tasks players with fighting back waves of enemies. Though unlike Save the World, LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is a free mode available to play directly from the Fortnite launcher.

Players will load into the Supernova Academy, which is a fully interactable area with a campus ready to explore and characters to talk to. But the main point of the Supernova Academy is to accept Academy Assignments — the things that send you out into battle.

For battle, players can choose between three Hero Classes, each of which have their own special abilities. The Rift Ripper can teleport short distances to get the jump on unsuspecting enemies, the Shadow Caller can take to the skies and use ranged attacks and The Hunter is a more classic shooter hero, ready to charge in with dual pistols and an iron will.

Once on the battlefield, the heroes will have to defeat enemies as they come in waves as well as complete objectives that come with each mission. Progression earned during these missions is had in the form of Hero XP, which turn into Skill Points that can be used to upgrade abilities. Essence is a secondary collectable that can be used to upgrade weapons and unlock the likes of Dual Daggers and Plasma Pistols.

There are three locations at the launch of LEGO Fortnite Expeditions: Busted Bridge, Spire Excavation Site and Utopia City. Though the number of missions is greater, so each map will have an extra bit of replayability as the objectives shift each time you play. And there’s two more locations set to arrive in the future — Demon’s Domain and the Supernova Academy.

LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is available now and can be played for free via the Fortnite launcher. It joins a host of other LEGO Fortnite experiences, including LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, a survival-style game in a similar vein as Minecraft, and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, which allows players to design and build their own LEGO Fortnite islands and invite others to explore and play custom minigames.
