Czechia LEGO factory celebrates 25 years of building LEGO play

The LEGO factory in Kladno, Czechia is marking 25 years in business, celebrating with community events and a giant LEGO brick recreation of the Czech crown.

Kladno’s LEGO factory is celebrating its 25th anniversary by highlighting the factory’s many achievements and taking family activities in the spirit of the LEGO brand to the local community.

When it first opened in 2000, the Kladno LEGO factory had a mere 80 employees. But as the factory has expanded to cover 124,000 square metres, the team has grown: more than 3,300 employees now ensure Kladno’s LEGO bricks are manufactured and sorted into sets with staggering efficiency. And that’s no exaggeration — the Kladno team has cemented itself as one of the LEGO Group’s best, setting the standard for all facets of LEGO manufacturing, from employee training to shopfloor set-up and process optimisation. Workers from Kladno helped to support new hires at the LEGO Group’s recently opened Vietnam factory.

Beyond manufacturing LEGO products, the Kladno factory is home to the Model Production team that built functioning, life-size F1 cars out of LEGO bricks that took to the track at the Miami Grand Prix. And in its own community, the factory hosts summer camps for employees’ children, while also supporting local children’s homes and organisations that help disadvantaged families across Czechia.

To celebrate that bond with its community, the Model Production team created a two-metre-tall replica of the medieval Czech royal crown with 128,333 bricks that was unveiled at an event in Prague. In addition to the unveiling, the vent offered ‘Play Like a King’ activities for children, where they could explore Czech history while building their own crowns. Danish and Czech ambassadors were present, as well as the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic.

“Over the past 25 years, the Kladno factory has been home to incredible displays of innovation, craftsmanship and creativity,” said Kladno factory General Manager Michaela T. Horáková. “This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the people who play a vital role in bringing LEGO play experiences to children and families around the world. The skill and passion of the team in Kladno makes me very excited for what’s to come over the next 25 years.”

Looking to the future, Kladno aims to be a beacon for the LEGO Group’s sustainability efforts, already having been the first LEGO factory to transition from plastic to paper pre-pack bags. The site’s renewable energy initiatives have been at the forefront as well, having installed over 3,500 solar panels in 2019 and expanding its solar capacity in the years since.

This is far from the only LEGO factory news this year — the LEGO Group opened its sixth factory in Vietnam and construction is on schedule for the seventh to open in the United States in 2027. Hungary’s factory also recently underwent significant expansion to up production capacity.
