Have you recently discovered the joys of LEGO building? Have you seen the amazing things that people are sharing on social media? If you’re getting back into LEGO building or want to try it out for the first time, there are some LEGO collections and themes that are a really good starting point.
If you’d like to give it a try for the first time – or the first time since you were a child – then there are lots of great themes that are a nice entry point to the brick. After all, those 2,000+ piece sets can be a bit daunting if you haven’t sat down to put LEGO elements together before!
Here are the best themes for beginners, people new to LEGO building or those who haven’t built with LEGO bricks since childhood.
LEGO Creator

By their very nature, LEGO Creator 3-in-1 sets are designed to be built and rebuilt. Each set offers three possible builds. For example, 31165 Wild Animals: Panda Family can be assembled as Pandas (as the name suggests), but also as orcas or penguins. The builds in each set typically revolve around the same theme (e.g. wild animals, aircraft, space).
LEGO Creator sets are therefore great for people new to LEGO building. They’re a great way to get aquainted with how LEGO bricks fit together, and how more advanced techniques (modified bricks, studs not on top) are used. Sets in this theme appeal to all budgets ranging from £10.99, with 31159 Wild Animals: Surprising Spider, to £54.99, with 31161 Medieval Dragon.
LEGO BrickHeadz

LEGO BrickHeadz set are smaller, more budget friendly LEGO sets. 40671 Potted Groot is £9.99 for example. What makes BrickHeadz a great option for newer fans is the theme’s tie-in to other established brands. You have Marvel BrickHeadz, Star Wars BrickHeadz – even Transformers BrickHeadz.
LEGO BrickHeadz sets have a cohesive aesthetic which also means they all have a similar building style. This can be reassuring for newer builders who are getting used to the LEGO Group’s instructions and building techniques. BrickHeadz sets with multiple characters (such as 40547 Obi-Wan Kenobi & Darth Vader) are great for collaborative building as each individual figure typically has its own instruction booklet and numbered bags.

LEGO Botanicals

LEGO Botanicals is a relatively new LEGO theme, only becoming its own stand-alone collection in 2025. If you’re new to LEGO building, the LEGO Group’s plant and flower builds offer imaginative, colourful and often unique building experiences. Botanicals sets often seamlessly incorporate LEGO Technic elements alongside traditional bricks, demonstrating the different types of techniques that are possible with the LEGO System.
What’s great about these sets is that they are really easy to display as they can fit in with your home decor. 10280 Flower Bouquet, 10313 Wildflower Bouquet and 10342 Pretty Pink Flower Bouquet are all good options as they are easy to spread over several build sessions.
LEGO Animal Crossing

LEGO Animal Crossing transports the joys of island life from the screen to the brick. Covering scenes and locations from Nintendo’s Animal Crossing, including the iconic concert given by K.K. Slider (77052 K.K.’s Concert at the Plaza), it captures the gentle nature of the beloved game. Players will recognise most of the sets in this theme and the builds have a bit of sophistication to them, but they are not too complex. They are great for combining to create your own island by mixing and matching sets.
77053 Stargazing with Celeste (£8.99) or 77047 Bunnie’s Outdoor Activities (£17.99) are nice smaller options within Animal Crossing.
LEGO Icons

The LEGO Group’s Icons theme offers great building experiences for older fans. Icons sets carry an 18+ age rating so they are specifically targeted at adults who want to get back to the brick. The theme is great for new builders because of the breadth of subject matter; it covers everything from the 1.5 meter tall 10307 Eiffel Tower to the iconic 10300 Back to the Future DeLorean. If you’re an adult and looking for a more challenging build, you can’t go wrong with LEGO Icons.
Whether you’ve never built a LEGO set before or you’re a returning fan, the LEGO Group’s immense offering has something for everyone. Its can be refreshing to try out different themes as you explore the endless possibilities of the LEGO System.
