What’s in the LEGO Dungeons & Dragons teaser?

Dunegons & Dragons is celebrating 50 years in 2024 and the LEGO Group has teased new products that are on the way. What does this new glimpse at LEGO Dungeons & Dragons reveal?

As Dungeons & Dragons celebrates its 50th anniversary of adventures across the realms of Faerûn, the LEGO Group is rolling initiative to join in the party and deliver a commemorative set. This is the first tease since a fan design won the competition on LEGO Ideas last year.

In a promotional video released on the LEGO Group’s social media channels is a new poster hinting at what might be coming soon. Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, is casting a shield of faith and diving into this gelatinous cube…

Is the gelatinous cube a hint?

Dungeons & Dragons players and those who have seen Disney’s Onward will immediately recognise this villain. A sentient cube that dissolves everything from bone to metal is a tough enemy to face. If the upcoming set is trying to capture the roleplaying adventure element of the game, then maybe a gelatinous cube will be included.

Eye of the Beholder

There’s another villainous mention on the LEGO shield element which features a detailed print of a Beholder. These orb-shaped creatures lurk in the Underdark and can wield powerful magic, ranging from petrifying its victims or casting fear to stop combatants from attacking. A minifigure may be wielding this weapon or the Beholder might be another villainous possibility as a tentacled mini-build.

Scrolling on

In the bottom left of the promotional image seems to be a 1×2 tile with a fireball scroll printed on it. Although many of the DnD classes are magic wielders, with fire often being a cantrip for the elf races, scrolls are still useful as bonus actions in a fight.

A dragon’s hoard?

There are quite a few gold coins scattered throughout the cube and across the ground. This might be reference to a great hoard of treasure that is the main quest for this set – if it stays close to the original fan design then there may even be an actual dragon. Or it could be a reference to a rogue who’s been busy pickpocketing.

A touch of class

The remaining items may be little references to the different classes that can be played within DnD – barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, warlock and wizard. Not everything fits the 12 typical classes, but the sword is a typical weapon for the fighter and barbarian, while the potion could be for the druid. A few of the more hazy shapes might be helmets for the medium-armour races and the unlucky skeleton seems to be holding a wizard’s staff.

More than one product

Note that the tease says ‘awesome adventures’ – plural! More than one! Does that mean there will be multiple adventures in the single Ideas set or does it meant multiple products? Maybe there’s going to be more than a single Ideas set…

While this teaser definitely doesn’t give much away, it certainly captures the spirit of D&D with its clever imagery. It will be interesting to see what else may be teased soon and have LEGO fans rolling a D20 for an investigation ability check. What are you hoping to see in LEGO Dungeons & Dragons?
