LEGO Sonic 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller revealed

40769 SEGA Genesis Controller is on the way from LEGO Sonic, letting fans of the classic console recreate their nostalgia in LEGO bricks.

It’s time to imagine playing classic SEGA games because there’s a replica controller coming that you build from LEGO bricks. Sonic 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller will come with 260 pieces for £16.99 / $19.99 / €19.99, when it launches on September 8, 2025.

The LEGO Group is no stranger to 18+ gaming sets, with the likes of 72046 Game Boy and 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System having released under the LEGO Super Mario theme in recent years. With 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller, the company is branching out into a new corner of gaming history.

The SEGA Genesis originally released in Japan in 1988, slowly but surely spreading to other parts of the world over the following years and cementing it as an icon of gaming in the 1990s. This new set is based on the classic controller design, though there were slight differences depending on region and year. 40769 SEGA Genesis Controller accounts for this with different options for the main logo sticker in the middle, while the A, B and C buttons will remain the same.

Black slopes are the name of the game with the controller, used to create the chunky shape and smooth edges. Very few studs are exposed, leaving the finished build quite clean — though enough studs seem to be present to keep this firmly within the realm of LEGO bricks. The D-pad is the only fully-studded detail and uses a single cross plate to achieve its look; the result isn’t clickable but serves its purpose well for a display model of this type.

For display, the controller comes with a small stand build made of light grey and red bricks so that it doesn’t have to sit flat on a shelf or precariously lean up against the wall. In terms of design, the stand doesn’t appear to be anything flashy but seems like it will do the job as well as you’d hope it would.

Accuracy was a priority for the front of the controller, less so for the back. There is a micro representation of the Green Hill Zone built into the back of the controller, complete with rings and a tiny, running Sonic printed on a 1×1 round tile. Everything on the back appears to be built fully within the bounds of the controller, so fans wanting to display it flat on a desk shouldn’t have any issues doing so.
