LEGO Masters Jr. Episode 3 – the Blocks recap and review

It’s Harry Potter time in LEGO Masters Jr. episode 3, as each team must build an uncommon common room for one of the four houses – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.

LEGO Masters Jr. continues with a third episode focusing on Harry Potter. With help from the Sorting Hat, Kelly Osbourne assigns a Hogwarts house to each team and they must then build an uncommon common room full of magic for that house.

It’s fun to see how the Harry Potter fans in the room react, especially Alison Sweeney who seems genuinely thrilled. To begin with Ajay and Zak are unsure as they don’t know the stories well, but Alison gives them pointers and brings them up to speed on the Wizarding World.

This third episode of four makes you feel disappointed that it will soon be over – just as the personalities of the contestants are coming out, the show is in its latter half. Seeing Vincent wander the room and chat to his new-found friends is a definite highlight.

Before this review continues, it’s time to declare an interest – Will Tachick, of team Will and Crosby, is a contributor to Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine for fans. SPOILERS AHEAD!

After a few early disagreements, Ajay and Zak focus and manage to pull off a Gryffindor common room packed with detail. They have tapestries, chairs, rugs and an ornate fireplace. Many of their small builds are nicely detailed. Given the time constraints they are under though, it’s the Powered Up! aspects that are most impressive – the pair are worthy winners.

Will and Crosby pack their Ravenclaw model with intricate details and even think about how they should pattern the floor. Their concept is that pixies are causing mayhem, which gives them the excuse to have magical mayhem going on everywhere. Most impressive of all though is the large raven in the centre, which uses every advanced LEGO technique in the book for a realistic form.

Stella and Chelle do a similarly great job with their oversized snakes, which are posed in clever ways. Generally they go a great job of capturing the moody, creepy vibe of Slytherin, with spires and dark colours giving it an ominous flavour. The Quidditch pitch is a bit incongruous alongside, but it’s also a really good model.

It probably is fair that Vincent and Hudson are the team to leave this week. Their Hufflepuff build is really good, with bookcases effectively framing the entire scene, but some sections are a bit blocky compared to other builds, as time was clearly against them. The effort that they put in and the support they had from Ravi Patel was always apparent, so they can exit the contest knowing that they put in a great showing.

How is it final time already? With all three teams having demonstrated their abilities, it will be exciting to see who can best channel the spirit of NINJAGO
