LEGO Masters Jr. Episode 2 – the Blocks recap and review

LEGO Masters Jr. episode 2 challenges the young builders to design a car and a mini version of their celebrity teammate that will be able to complete an epic stunt.

The show sees young LEGO fans compete in challenges to see who are the best builders – the winning team get $50,000, an enormous trophy and the title of LEGO Masters Jr. It airs on Fox every Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT, then arrives on Hulu the following day. While episode 1 focused on traditional building, the second episode of LEGO Masters Jr. features one of those build challenges that you can only do on television. Everyone would love to have a giant ramp at home to send LEGO cars down – or up – and that’s exactly what the contestants face.

In fact, there are two ramps with a cityscape in the middle. Each team must build a sturdy vehicle and include a brick replica of their celebrity, then see the vehicle go zooming up one ramp, fly over the city and land on the ramp at the other end. The instructions are that the LEGO passenger must survive the jump.

It’s not an easy one and feels a bit mean for an elimination challenge, given that none of the contestants will have ever tried anything like this at home!

Before this review continues, it’s time to declare an interest – Will Tachick, of team Will and Crosby, is a contributor to Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine for fans. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Stella and Chelle create a colourful chameleon car that is one of those builds that you can’t help but smile at. The Jordin Sparks figure inside is a bit blocky, but she seems to build that herself and, after all, it’s her teammates who are the experts. They manage to build the model in a really solid way and it survives a good portion of the jump.

Vincent and Hudson’s build isn’t the sturdiest of the bunch and falls into sections as it takes flight, but their decision to add two mini cars to it is ridiculously fun – and they even have a tiger inside the van, adding to the whimsy.

Ajay and Zak pack their build with colour and ensure that it is solid enough so that it actually pretty much survives the jump – a truly impressive feat. The colourful trail of elements following behind it is a really striking visual. What’s more, their figure technique is very effective.

Will and Crosby have an awesome concept, leaning into the hobby of fishing that they share with their celebrity teammate Andy Richter. They intentionally fill the model with loose bricks for a spectacular cascade as it takes flight, but unfortunately they don’t secure the Andy figure well enough and he doesn’t make it off the starting ramp.

It’s a real shame that Max and Zoe have to go home after this one, as their build is one of the strongest concepts – they stay within the realm of a vehicle but turn the car into a vacation ship, with their LEGO Porsha Williams seemingly having a great time inside (and featuring fabulous eyebrows). Unfortunately the character doesn’t make it all the way, so they are the unlucky ones this time.

The competiton must go on though and next week there will be Harry Potter builds galore – it will be interesting to see how the magical world inspires these builders.
