LEGO Ideas 21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial final design revealed

The LEGO Group has revealed the official design for 21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, inspired by a fan creation and soon to be available to buy.

Last year the LEGO Group announced that Richard Lemeiter’s concept for a LEGO set inspired by Steven Spielberg’s iconic alien character had been selected for official release. Now, the final design for 21370 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has been revealed.

The set will launch on August 1 and is made up of 1,226 pieces. The set will retail for £119.99 / $139.99.

E.T. tells the story of an alien who finds himself lost on Earth and connects with a boy named Elliot. The two work together to ‘phone home’ and find E.T.’s family, while outrunning the government scientists who want to capture the being.

The LEGO set looks similar to previous buildable characters like 21361 Gremlins: Gizmo and 75430 Wicket the Ewok. The head can be posed looking up, looking down and rotated 360 degrees. A light brick is included in the box that is used to convey E.T.’s beating heart.

As well as building the iconic alien, the set builds a flowerpot accessory to represent the moment in the film when he heals them.

LEGO Ideas is a platform where fans can submit creations and if they reach 10,000 votes from fellow users then the LEGO Group will consider it for official release.

“Young or old, we have all been touched by this little being,” Richard said when submitting the concept. “There’s something universal and timeless about E.T. I was just ten years old when I first saw the film and it became engraved in my mind at a time when space was one of my main interests. Watching it again at different points in my life, I discover a new message each time and the emotion remains intact.”

Another Ideas set was announced recently – 40912 Sea Serpent, which will soon be available for free at LEGO.com with qualifying orders.

Ideas has much more on the way – a huge slate of fan-designed sets have been announced for the next year, including Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Downton Abbey, Ramen, Vintage Sewing Machine, Smurf Village and La Catrina.
