Tips for your first LEGO Dungeons & Dragons campaign

Blocks has some tips to help you prepare for playing the exciting new LEGO version of Dungeons & Dragons.

21384 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is the new LEGO Ideas set based on Dungeons & Dragons. Once you have built the model, you can then play through it with a bespoke campaign that you can download or find in the LEGO.com Insiders rewards section.

You’ve built your dragon’s lair. Your minifigures are armed and ready to delve into its dungeons. But what else do you need? If you’re a first time Dungeons & Dragons player then the new one-shot campaign accompanying 21384 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale is a great place to begin. Almost everything required to play is included in the set, though there are a few extras that can help make your gaming night even better.

Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, is rolling a perception check to tell you about 5 things you’ll need to play LEGO D&D…

Print off your character sheets

Having your character sheet right in front of you is invaluable. It’s the easiest way to see exactly what your character can do, when they have advantage, which dice to roll, and to stay on top of your spell slots. It all sounds scary if you’re new to the game, but the character sheet is your personal walkthrough on almost everything you can do with your chosen class. And don’t worry – your DM will guide you through it!

Make sure to grab some dice

Unfortunately this set doesn’t come with any special themed dice, though the Mimic gift-with-purchase can hold your dice collection. While D&D Beyond has matching virtual dice you can use online, having your own sets really adds to the experience. To start playing, you only need a starter pack that containes one of each – a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and D20. Typically a D4, D6, D8, D10 and D12 are used for weapons damage, attacks and spells, then the the D20 is used to check if a roll is successful, whether that’s for attacks or ability checks.

Consider using a dice tray

While not essential, having a dice try stops any from rolling off a table. It helps to protect the dice from damage or landing underneath a sofa. You don’t need anything fancy, though there are plenty of unique ones on the internet that can also double as dice storage. At a pinch you can also use a shallow cardboard box or build one from LEGO bricks.

Plenty of snacks

Dungeons & Dragons is not a quick game. As it’s all about storytelling and role-play, it takes a while to get into the world. Make sure you’ve got snacks handy and to stay hydrated! This is supposed to be a very friendly, co-operative environment, so just make yourself comfortable.

Check that your DM is prepared

Your dungeon master (DM) is your guide through this story. Before you begin playing, check that they are ready with everything that they need and know which characters are being played. By knowing who everybody is playing, then they can expect to address certain characters for specific abilities and tailor parts of the story. This way your playthrough will go smoother and be less stressful.
