Today, City minifigures can take to the stars seemingly whenever they want. No sooner does one space exploration line retire than another one takes its place, each more detailed and better than the last. It was, however, not always so.
For more than a decade, the original Town theme remained firmly rooted on planet Earth, but that changed in 1990 with the release of 1682 Space Shuttle Launch. Sporting the official NASA logo and a lot of clever parts usage, it was one of – if not the first – LEGO set to depict a specific, real-world vehicle realistically. It also launched a long string of space shuttle inspired models that continue to this day.
