There had never been anything quite like Time Cruisers when the LEGO Group’s wacky theme debuted in 1996. It was all about time travelling, with Back to the Future seemingly serving as a subtle influence.
Because of the time travel concept, the theme included references and parts from virtually every other theme available at the time, including Castle, Space and Pirates. Each set also included at least one mechanism to convey that they are bizarre contraptions.
6491 Rocket Racer was the smallest of the theme’s sets but still managed to follow both of the design team’s self-imposed rules. While the wisdom of traveling through time in an open cockpit is questionable, there is no doubt that this tiny model packed a lot into a small package.
