Minifigures have been traveling to space since they arrived in the LEGO brick world in 1978. This year, the LEGO Group has a special focus on space across multiple themes including City. As the focus seems to be on larger wheeled vehicles, smaller rovers are completely absent. That’s a shame, as they were a mainstay of LEGO Space.
The rovers used on later Apollo missions served as inspiration for this build. They were two seat vehicles with radar dishes and antenna. However, Moon missions from the 1960s and 1970s need to be updated. Lots of modern parts such as bars, clips, claws and paddles mimic robotic arms and sampling equipment. Classic parts do have their place though – two old school hammers serve as mounts for scientific instruments.
Drones are a major part of this year’s Space theme and can be deployed from most of the sets. There is a perfect spot for one in the rover’s rear bed… so once you have built the rover, try building a drone and adding it to the model.
