Largest ever LEGOLAND park opens in Shanghai

A new LEGOLAND park has opened in Shanghai, officially becoming the first LEGOLAND Resort in China and the largest LEGOLAND park in the world.

LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort has officially opened in Fengjing Town, Jinshan District, and is now the first LEGOLAND park in China and the largest LEGOLAND park to date.

The new park covers 318,000 square metres and hosts eight themed lands with more than 75 attractions, including rides, shows and other activities. As is typical for the parks, LEGOLAND Shanghai also comes packed with fun LEGO models to wow guests — numbering in the thousands, these models are built from a combined total of 85 million LEGO bricks. In total, 10,000 people in 300 teams from 15 different countries worked on the new park.

Opening festivities took place on July 5 and kicked off a ‘Grand Opening Week’ running through July 13. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the LEGO Group, Merlin Entertainments, the Shanghai and Jinshan Governments and New Jinshan Investment Group. There were thousands of eager LEGO fans, too.

“LEGOLAND Shanghai will be an integral part of the LEGO ecosystem in China and a great addition to our retail network and brand events enhancing the immersive and interactive LEGO play experience for our customers,” said LEGO CEO Niels B. Christiansen. “I look forward to LEGOLAND Shanghai becoming a new cultural landmark for family interaction and bringing unique joy to all LEGO fans in China and beyond.”

“LEGOLAND Shanghai blends the tried and tested LEGOLAND experience, which is so successful across our parks from Denmark to Dubai, with rich Chinese cultural elements, creating a destination that is both globally recognisable and locally resonant, connecting children with their heritage through imaginative play,” said Merlin Entertainments CEO Fiona Eastwood.

Exclusive attractions are a staple of the new park, with LEGOLAND Shanghai becoming home to the LEGO Monkie Kid live show, a boat tour through 25x scale LEGO Chinese water town and Shanghai skyline and the largest LEGO minifigure ever made at the LEGOLAND Creative World. BRICK STREET and BRICKTOPIA! will also host big LEGO builds and daily performances. All of the park’s themed “lands” will have rides based on original LEGO IPs like NINJAGO and Friends.

The park also promises to have a whopping ten retail stores, including the biggest The BIG Shop in Asia and the first-ever LEGO Monkie Kid’s Merch shop. These stores are said to sell some exclusive items, which is sure to be a treat for guests at the park but an annoyance for collectors who can’t make the trip.

LEGOLAND Shanghai is the twelfth LEGOLAND park, joining the likes of LEGOLAND Billund, LEGOLAND Windsor and LEGOLAND California, and is now open for all guests.
