Where should new players begin in LEGO Fortnite?

Where should you begin in LEGO Fortnite? As Epic Games adds yet another game mode, Blocks explains how new players can enter LEGO Fortnite without being overwhelmed.

After more than six months of bug patches and minor additions, LEGO Fortnite just had its next biggest update that adds an entirely new mode to the gameagain. LEGO Fortnite Expeditions places players in the middle of Supernova Academy where they can explore campus, train to be heroes and take on Academy Assignments to defeat villains in order to level up their skills. It’s a co-operative experience that supports up to 4 players and has 3 different Hero Classes – Shadow Caller, Rift Ripper, and The Hunter.

But it also means that when new players load up LEGO Fortnite, there are now a confusing number of options that offer completely different game styles. So where should you begin, especially if you’ve never played Fortnite before?

Upgrade your LEGO hobby! If you take out a subscription to Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, you’ll get each issue first and at a discount, plus other perks including a free digital subscription and the chance to win LEGO prizes every month.

The first place to start is looking at what games you’ve already played and the genres you like. There are LEGO Fortnite Islands to appeal to just about every type of gamer. Are you a life-sim fan who has hours in Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley? If that’s the case then LEGO Fortnite: Brick Life is probably the mode for you. This is an online life-sim which has players creating a life for themselves in the bustle of Brick Bay, from decorating a home to working different jobs around the city. It’s very relaxed and there are even some fun mini-games like racing.

Meanwhile LEGO Fortnite: Odyssey is a survival game. It’s tough. Unless you have experience playing survival games, then even the Cosy option will still throw you into the thick of it. Before its numerous updates and map expansions, this was a great option instead of Minecraft. But now it is just as incredibly overwhelming with a huge map and multiple biomes to survive in. This is for players who want a challenge and who don’t mind throwing their controller at a wall when a boss battle goes wrong.

If you enjoy combat but don’t want to worry about having food and tools to survive in different biomes, then the new LEGO Fortnite Expeditions is a great alternative to Odyssey. It’s a player-versus-enemies game that has you pick a Hero Class (with unique abilities) and take on missions assigned by Supernova Academy alongside up to four friends. The combat is relatively simple – though it does get harder as you level up – yet there’s plenty of strategy in choosing the right weapons and charms.

These are the three main LEGO Fortnite Islands and they offer great ways to start for different styles of gamers. But if you’re unsure of playing a LEGO Fortnite game and don’t want to spend hours trying one of these, then there are a couple of others that offer short-form LEGO gaming content. LEGO Tilted Towers, Obby Fun, Prop Hunt, and Smoothie Odyssey are extremely easy and a fun way for Fortnite fans to try the LEGO style. They’re filled with the classic humour LEGO fans love but with the controls and graphics Fortnite players expect. And they’re perfect for short play sessions if you’re trying to gain more XP too.

Don’t forget, if you prefer physical building to gaming, there are four sets available to buy – 77070 Durrr Burger, 77071 Supply Llama, 77072 Peely Bone and 77073 Battle Bus.
