LEGO Super Mario 72050 Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8 revealed

LEGO Super Mario is adding another racer to the track: 72050 Mario KartLuigi & Mach 8, a new 18+ display set.

LEGO Super Mario 72050 Mario KartLuigi & Mach 8 will come with 2,234 pieces for a retail price of £159.99 / $179.99 / €179.99, releasing on April 1, 2026, with preorders open now on LEGO.com.

Mario Kart is one of the Mario franchise’s most consistent hits — what’s not to love about racing around fantastically cartoony tracks and hurling turtle shells at your fellow drivers? But even so, it wasn’t a part of the LEGO Super Mario theme for its first five years following its launch in 2020.

Then in 2024, the theme announced it would be hitting the track in 2025 with a range of Mario Kart sets. Most of these were in line with other LEGO Super Mario sets, designed to have a similar play experience to the usual offerings. But then 72037 Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart released, bringing an 18+ polish to the line. And now Luigi will be joining the race on April 1.

72050 Mario KartLuigi & Mach 8 will come with 2,234 pieces — approximately 300 more than Mario. Dimensions clock in at 41cm (16in) long, 23cm (9in) wide and 25cm (10in) high.

You will be able to display Luigi’s kart on a small display stand at dynamic angles or off the stand flat on the shelf. While the kart is off the stand, fans can take advantage of the steering mechanism as well as the spinning, flaming exhaust controlled by the back wheels.

The overall design of Luigi and his kart appear to be similar to Mario’s set from last year. Luigi himself is mostly a static, large-scale model that’s designed to sit in the kart and not much else. One of his arms can be posed to either hold the wheel or give the classic Mario Kart fist pump; the head can swivel side-to-side, letting Luigi scan the track for any bananas lying in wait. What can’t be posed are the legs – and that’s what ultimately confines Luigi to the kart.

The kart itself looks to make good use of slopes and angled building techniques to create the rounded shaping of the Mach 8. Just a handful of decorated elements are used to add some detail, primarily for the hub caps and some giant L’s so there’s no doubt as to who this kart belongs to. All these details — plus the ones on Luigi — appear to be prints rather than stickers.

Built at the same scale as 72037 Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart, 72050 Mario KartLuigi & Mach 8 looks like it will be a solid addition to the track. If you’re eager to add a second plumber-turned-racing-star to your collection, the set is available for preorder now and will officially release on April 1.
