LEGO Professor of Play shares tips for families

The academic with the most desirable job title in the world, LEGO Professor of Play Dr Paul Ramchandani, has shared his tips for families to be more playful ahead of World Play Day.

World Play Day is coming on June 11 and the LEGO Group has a new brand video with Jason Momoa to mark the occasion. The International Day of Play is recognised by the UN and is intended to promote the importance of play in child development.

“Play isn’t just something children do for fun, it’s essential for their development,” says University of Cambridge LEGO Professor of Play Dr Paul Ramchandani. “It’s how young children make sense of the world, build confidence and creativity, and learn how to connect with the people around them. It doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming; even short snippets of play in the day have a lasting impact on a child’s wellbeing.”

He shares his tips for playing regularly:

• Think in minutes – play does not to be structured and scheduled. It can be part of the existing routine, whether it’s a short wiggle while brushing teeth, putting on silly voices for bedtime stories or a quick game at a bus stop.

• Let go of the need to ‘do it right’ – there’s no script for play. Children get the most benefit from free, spontaneous and joyful rather than structured. What matters is that is a time of shared enjoyment between parents and children.

• Take time to follow your child’s lead – children are the real experts in play so let them direct what the play is. When they take the lead, they are building creativity, confidence and communication skills.

• Use the world around you as your playground – making play valuable is not about buying new toys.  Pavements can be hopscotch grids and car journeys can become storytelling sessions. When children are in familiar environments, they feel more confident to express themselves.

• Turn the everyday into the unexpected – play can come in many shapes and sizes. Mundane moments during everyday life can lead to powerful play opportunities. Seize any small chance to play during your everyday routine.
