The LEGO Group has unveiled 11 new SMART Play sets, all part of the expanding LEGO Pokémon theme. Unlike the three debut sets earlier this year, this collection covers various price points and are not targeted at adult fans.
Those who have been waiting for play based LEGO Pokémon aimed at children, rather than the large scale adult display models that launched the theme earlier this year, will be delighted to see that there are 11 new sets coming on August 1.
Each of the new SMART Play sets either includes a SMART Brick or is compatible with one. Once you have a SMART Brick, it can interact with the special 2×2 tile SMART Tags that you build into the models. When combined, the 2×4 brick will have different light and sound reactions designed to encourage children to interact with the model.

LEGO SMART Play launched in March in the Star Wars theme, offering a variety of play opportunities for children including dramatic battle play. That continues in some of the Pokémon sets, but there is also nurture play in the new sets that encourages the gentler side of the experience, so that children can imagine befriending and training their ‘mon.
“We are thrilled to bring together two beloved brands that are known worldwide. For the first time ever, LEGO Pokémon creatures respond to children’s actions: meaning fans can build, train and interact with their LEGO Pokémon creatures through hands-on, imaginative play that encourages creativity, confidence and storytelling,” said LEGO Chief Marketing and Product Officer Julia Goldin. “LEGO SMART Play is an expansion of our existing LEGO System-in-Play and we are excited to integrate it into our latest LEGO Pokémon sets. It’s all about inviting children to explore, experiment and bring their own ideas to their adventures!”
“Pokémon has always been about the joy of discovery and connection, and we see every day how powerful imagination can be when it’s nurtured and given the space to grow,” says Gaku Susai, The Pokémon Company International Chief Product and Experience Officer. “Working with the LEGO Group and its SMART Brick technology brings those shared values to life in a new, interactive way. Together, we’re giving young Trainers a hands-on way to engage with the world of Pokémon, as well as opening up new possibilities for a new generation of fans.”
