LEGO Education retires SPIKE portfolio

LEGO Education’s SPIKE portfolio — the foundation of FIRST LEGO League and used in classrooms globally — is ending production, effective immediately.

All SPIKE products produced by LEGO Education have retired, though digital support will continue until June 2031.

LEGO Education has announced the retirement of the SPIKE portfolio, a range of technology-based products designed for classroom use. Direct sales are officially ending on June 30, 2026, but with the entire range listed as out of stock on LEGO.com, it seems direct sales have already ceased. Licensed resellers will continue to sell SPIKE products for as long as their stocks last.

While sales of SPIKE products are halting, previously purchased sets will continue to function as usual and still be usable in classrooms. Through June 30, 2031, LEGO Education will continue to support the SPIKE App. This means that the app will have its usual bug fixes and updates so it can run on the latest operating systems. Beyond June 2031, however, all updates will cease and SPIKE will become increasingly difficult to use.

Similarly, the SPIKE curriculum will continue to be available through LEGO Education and the SPIKE App until June 30, 2031. Use of the lessons plans and SPIKE at large could theoretically continue past that date, as the products themselves will continue to operate, but without software updates and easy access to lesson plans, SPIKE will be effectively shut down.

LEGO Education Head of Product Experience Andrew Sliwinski said this regarding the retirement of SPIKE:

“As the head of Product Experience at LEGO Education, I personally want to thank you for engaging so many students with our SPIKE portfolio.

“My team and I dedicate years of work to designing, developing, and testing our products for the ultimate purpose of getting them into the hands of students. Because of this, it is always a bittersweet moment for our team when we retire a product too.

“We are known for our commitment to delivering exceptional product quality that stands the test of time. This focus on quality means that our products not only meet but exceed industry standards for safety and long-lasting durability. In fact, many of our legacy LEGO Education solutions continue to be utilised in schools today, showcasing both the lasting value we provide and the trust schools place when investing in our offerings.

“Your satisfaction and trust in our products are our top priorities, and we strive to uphold these values in everything we do.

“Thank you for inspiring students around the world through learning and play with LEGO Education!”
