What’s going on in the new LEGO Fortnite update?

As LEGO Fortnite has its first major update, Blocks dives into a new world of fishy friends and swimmingly good food…

Gone Fishin’ introduces the first major update to LEGO Fortnite since the game debuted last year. It’s added a multitude of new features that majorly impact the game and the way players can interact with the world. There are now new resources, new tasks, and a bunch of exclusive trophies. So, what’s so great about some LEGO fish?

Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, is grabbing our tackle and going to the shoreline to help explain some of the new experiences for players…

What kind of rod?

Like most of the tools in LEGO Fortnite, there are two different levels of fishing rod that you can make depending on the resources you have available. The most basic fishing rod can be made with easily collectible wood and cord, but you’ll need to head into the caves for knot-root if you want a stronger one. Having the upgraded version increases your chances of catching a Legendary fish!

Is there a best fishing spot?

Much like Animal Crossing there is no specific spot needed to go fishing. As long as you’re at the shoreline then you’ll catch something – though a fish isn’t guaranteed. You may end up catching junk or driftwood too. And just like in Animal Crossing, the biome and time of day matter. Different species will show up at different times, so explore and experiment!

Is that a blender?

Alongside new tools there’s a brand new workstation – a food processor. As its name suggests you just throw in the fish and get sashimi out. Or if you’ve managed to catch a squid then you can make a delicious (supposedly) fishy broth that easily increases your health points. Blending up a shield fish will also get you a shield with dinner.

Fish n’ chips

While blending fish unlocks recipes for armour and other things, the new fish are also on the grill menu. Each species has its own advantages and that includes sushi recipes. Yes, there’s now sushi in Fortnite. Go over to the grill with some fish fillets and wheat grain and you’ll be able to whip up a California roll in no time.

Is it all about fish?

While it’s mainly about creatures that swim in the sea, Gone Fishin’ also adds Sand and Glass to the game, allowing you to craft a spyglass for scouting from a distance and a very handy compass. The LEGO Fortnite map is a bit basic, so having a compass to help navigate between points will be a welcome addition for daring minifigure explorers.

With Gone Fishin’ adding so much to the game there’s a lot of potential for increasing the variability and re-playability in LEGO Fortnite. It’s certainly fun checking out these new features! And hopefully there will be more updates to come later in the year. LEGO Fortnite is available to play now for free on all major consoles and PC.
