The five best sets based on The LEGO Movie

Hard as it is to believe, a full decade has passed since The LEGO Movie smashed the box office and Blocks is in search of five of its best sets.

It may feel like just yesterday that The LEGO Movie stormed into cinemas and captured the imaginations of fans young and old, but 2024 marks 10 years since its release. The Adventures of Clutch Powers may have come a few years prior, but that was straight to video and never saw the big screen. The LEGO Movie, by contrast, was a big screen spectacle with all of the support that goes along with it.

That included plenty of tie-in LEGO sets, with a handful releasing just before the film’s opening to build up the hype. The film’s success spawned plenty of additional sets as well, not to mention a sequel and spin-offs that each had their own lines of tie-in sets. To commemorate The LEGO Movie’s 10th anniversary, Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, picks out five of the very best LEGO Movie sets.

70800 Getaway Glider

Sometimes the best sets come in small packages, and 70800 Getaway Glider, with its 89 pieces and 3 minifigures is perfect proof. Emmet’s glider is a wonderful amalgamation of random pieces put together to make a fun build. Some decorated elements add a nice bit of extra detail, and a chain makes a clever handle. The robot cowboys are fun figures, mashing futuristic robots with the classic cowboy aesthetic. And who can say no to a LEGO horse?

70806 Castle Cavalry

Most LEGO fans can agree on their love of LEGO Castle, so the theme’s representation in The LEGO Movie was a more than welcome surprise. 70806 Castle Cavalry does an excellent job of combining the beloved theme with the wacky creativity of the movie. It’s a 2-in-1 model, giving builders the option to create either a traditional gatehouse or a flying castle to help in the fight against Lord Business. A Micromanager is included for the brave knights to fight, and they better act fast, as the evil machine is trying to get away with a kidnapped resident of Bricksburg.

70814 Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech

70814 Emmet’s Construt-o-Mech comes from the film’s climax, when Emmet embraces his potential as a Master Builder and makes an impressive mech out of construction vehicles. The physical model is just as crazy as its on-screen counterpart, featuring treads on its feet, claw and steamroller hands, plus two wrecking balls attached to its shoulders. Emmet sits right in the middle, well protected by the mech’s sturdy body. The minifigure selection isn’t the greatest, only having a simple Emmet figure and two robot skeletons, but the Angry Kitty figure is a nice addition.

70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!

One of the most memorable parts of The LEGO Movie is the lovable Classic Spaceman Benny and his not-so-subtle obsession with spaceships. 70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! is a wonderful hybrid of new and old, merging Classic Space styles with modern pieces and techniques. The result is a gorgeous spaceship that holds up a decade on, with fun details all around, including plenty of references to Classic Space builds, such as detachable sections and arrows pointing towards play features. The minifigure lineup includes spacesuit versions of Wildstyle and Unikitty, plus Emmet in his robot disguise.

70810 MetalBeard’s Sea Cow

70810 MetalBeard’s Sea Cow is to LEGO Pirates what 70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! is to Classic Space. The monster 2,705 piece set takes the idea of a pirate ship and dials it up to eleven. The rear of the ship towers up almost as high as the main mast, giving the Sea Cow a very unique look when placed next to other pirate ships. The model also takes some steampunk influence, with some fans and pipes mixed into the ship. The ship’s figurehead is a flying cow, just adding to the absurdity of it all. MetalBeard himself is an impressive build, and he is accompanied by a great roster of characters — plus the famous double-decker couch.
