New LEGO movie from James Morosini in development

Inner Child, a new LEGO movie from James Morosinni, has reportedly entered the early stages of development at Universal.

The next project on the docket from the LEGO Group and Universal, Inner Child is described as an elevated comedy that will now be made in the LEGO movie style, similar to Piece by Piece from last year.

Universal and the LEGO Group signed a deal in 2020 giving Universal the exclusive rights for the production and distribution of any new LEGO movies, moving away from Warner Bros., the studio behind the likes of The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie.

This new project with James Morosinni, the creative behind 2022’s I Love My Dad, is sparse on details for now, as it’s only in the very early stages of development, Deadline reports. What is known about the project is that it was originally written for live action and wasn’t intended to be a LEGO movie in the slightest. But execs at Universal and the LEGO Group loved the script so much that they decided to back the project. This does mean that the edgy script will be tweaked to fit the LEGO brand, both in terms of content and visual style, but the spirt of Morosinni’s project should be maintained. Any plot details for the comedy film have not been shared at this time.

Inner Child is one of many new LEGO movies in development — a stark contrast from the LEGO Group’s absence from the silver screen for most of the decade. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part released in 2019, the last LEGO movie to release under Warner Bros, and the only project since was 2024’s Piece by Piece.

But now, there are four LEGO movies under development in addition to Inner Child, all of which are surprisingly slated to be live action projects. Patty Jenkins, Jake Kasdan and Joe Cornish are all working on their own projects, with no specific details available yet. The showrunners for LEGO NINJAGO, Kevin and Dan Hageman, are then developing a live-action LEGO NINJAGO movie. The project would be the second time NINJAGO hits the big screen, following 2017’s The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, though that film only featured snippets of live action, while this new project would forgo animation entirely.
