LEGO Star Wars 75308 R2-D2 announced

There’s a brand new LEGO Star Wars set on the way for May the Fourth, with 75308 R2-D2 offering a detailed model of the beloved astromech droid.

For the first time in nine years, the LEGO Star Wars team is launching a new stand-alone set featuring cinema’s most lovable robot. 75308 R2-D2 is a functional model of the beep-booping bot that comes with an exclusive 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm brick.

A special function built using a complex Technic interior allows the middle leg to be deployed, so the droid can be displayed in two or three legged mode. There are also three extending gadgets and Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber hidden within R2’s body.

‘We have had the pleasure of creating hundreds of Star Wars-inspired models over the past two decades since we first launched LEGO Star Wars sets. As Lucasfilm celebrates their 50th anniversary, it seemed fitting to challenge ourselves and push the limits of what is possible with LEGO bricks by recreating a fan-favourite Star Wars character in great detail like we have never achieved before,’ said Creative Lead Jens Kronvold Frederiksen. ‘We are delighted with the result and hope our fans get as much joy out of building the sets as we did designing it.’

You can find the set on the LEGO 2021 checklist and there’ll be a review of the set in Blocks Issue 79, the LEGO magazine for fans.
