LEGO Party! video game coming later this year

LEGO Party!, a new party game from the LEGO Group and SMG Studio, has been announced for all major platforms. It’s intended for groups to play together just like Mario Party titles.

The LEGO Group is attempting to get a slice of the party game pie with its new game, LEGO Party!. The game will release later this year for all platforms, including PC and last-gen consoles.

LEGO Party! will follow a similar structure to the Mario Party games, with large boards for players to move around and plenty of minigames for them to engage with. Similar to other party games, the winner will be determined by whoever collects the most of the game’s chosen token, which in LEGO Party! is Golden Bricks — a more than fitting collectable.

The game has Challenge Zones and 60 minigames for players to take part in. Each one uses the LEGO Group’s huge catalogue of themes to its full advantage. There are areas modelled after Pirates, Space, NINJAGO and more. Each themed area has distinct features befitting the subject matter, like a kraken-infested pirate ship parked just offshore and an intergalactic hotdog stand for astronauts who need a quick snack.

Each area also comes with brick-built dragons, creatures and monsters to bring a little extra life to each play session. Some of these characters seem to be based on existing LEGO sets, while others have been designed for the game.

Four players will be able to take part in the wacky fun at once via couch or online co-op. Online multiplayer is always a plus for modern games, especially one like LEGO Party! where playing with friends is half the fun. Cross-platform compatibility is built into the online multiplayer, so friends will be able to play together no matter what platforms they’re on. Single player is also an option for when you want to jump in a have a go at some of the minigames on your own. Be sure to check out the official trailer for a look at some of the minigames and boards.

Breaking from the trend of all-digital releases started by LEGO Builder’s Journey and the upcoming LEGO Voyagers, LEGO Party! will have a physical release on all current-gen consoles — Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. The game will be digital-only on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. And the current-gen hardware will of course have a digital release as well, which is a necessity given the existence of the digital-only PS5 and Xbox Series S. The exact release date for the physical and digital copies is not yet known but they are expected later this year.
