Blocks is expecting the army and checking out the many LEGO Star Wars Clone Army commanders that have appeared in sets over the years.
Some of the most beloved Clone Troopers in the Star Wars universe are the commanders and captains, who feature heavily in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon. In the LEGO Star Wars world, a proper Clone Commander didn’t appear until 2008, when three were released as part of the first wave of sets based on The Clone Wars.
Since then, five of the most prominent Clone Commanders and Captains have joined the ranks of the LEGO Clone Army, with all but one having both Phase I and II versions. There are far too many variants of all these Clones to fit in one list, so this brief history will focus on the most popular versions of each character. Join Blocks, the monthly LEGO magazine, on Kamino for this inspection of the LEGO Clone Trooper Commanders and Captains.
2008 — Commander Fox
Commander Fox debuted in the early days of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, so it makes sense that he also featured in the first wave of LEGO sets based on the film and show. The minifigure released in 7681 Separatist Spider Droid in 2008 alongside a standard Clone Trooper minifigure. Commander Fox’s minifigure makes excellent use of the beautiful dark red colour, with detailing on both his torso and helmet. Only ever releasing in one set, this minifigure is highly desired among Clone Wars collectors and prices often reach triple digits. In 2023, Commander Fox finally got a Phase II variant, which appeared in 75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship.
2011 — Commander Wolffe
Commander Wolffe doesn’t feature too frequently in Star Wars media, but that hasn’t stopped him from being one of the most popular Clone Troopers. He made his first and only true appearance in 2011’s 7964 Republic Frigate as part of a very impressive minifigure lineup. Wolffe has an exquisitely detailed helmet as well as printed legs — a rarity on Clone Trooper minifigures at the time. He also has a unique face print to show his five o’clock shadow and missing eye. A Star Wars Rebels version of the character released a few years later, but there’s never been a Phase II version of the character, leaving the 2011 figure as the only fully armoured variant of Commander Wolffe.
2013 — Captain Rex
Captain Rex first arrived in 2008 wearing his Phase I armour and appeared in handful of sets. But the Phase II variant from 2013’s 75012 BARC Speeder with Sidecar has become one of the most sought-after LEGO Clone Trooper minifigures. Only ever appearing in that one set, Phase II Captain Rex is an excellent representation of the character, featuring printing to show where Rex welded his Phase I and II armour together. The cloth pauldron and kama are welcome additions, too. This figure holds the distinction of being the only Phase II Clone Commander to be made with this art style, making it a unique entry in the CLone collection. In 2023, a new version of Phase II Rex finally hit shelves, albeit it in the rather pricey 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser.

2014 — Commander Gree
Commander Gree first appeared in 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith wearing his modified Phase II armour with camouflage and a silver helmet. LEGO Commander Gree debuted in Phase I gear in 2012, but shortly after received an upgrade to Phase II in 2014’s 75043 AT-AP. The Phase II Gree minifigure is simply one of the finest LEGO Clone Trooper minifigures, with incredible printing all around. The silver helmet and green visor are the envy of the Clone Army and the torso printing is equally fantastic. The LEGO Group clearly knew it struck gold with this figure, as he reappeared in 2016, then again in 2019 with a few minor tweaks.
2022 — Commander Cody
The LEGO Star Wars community spent the better part of the 2010s begging for a Phase II Commander Cody minifigure. Phase I Cody was one of the original three commanders in 2008, but fans desperately wanted his iconic Episode III look in minifigure form. In 2022’s 75337 AT-TE Walker, their wishes finally came true. Phase II Cody is the perfect Clone Trooper minifigure, with stunning printing all over, made to look as if it’s been through plenty of battles during the Clone Wars. Phase II Cody also has a unique face print, fitting for one of the most popular Clone Troopers.
