It's not a toy, it's a display model. And a GREAT one at that!

I've only built one other Lego set before, and that was the 500 or so piece x-wing. This fantastic kit is absolutely no toy. You'll get no play value out of it; that's not what it's for. It's a display piece and it's a very good looking display piece; quite commanding in its appearance. I had a LOT of reservations about perching the finished shuttle on top of the stilt-like display stand ("this looks rickety, it's too top-heavy, it'll easily fall over, etc, etc"), but its actually pretty sturdy. I'll probably take it back down off the stand and remount it on its landing gear just so it's not as big of a target for passing room traffic, but for a just-finished build with all the visual novelty it's providing right now, I'll leave it like it is.

The amount of structural and mechanical engineering that's been put into something like this is no less than astounding. 2500 bricks, bits and pieces, and they all press-fit into an operating model of this size and complexity without even a single drop of glue? Wow!

One reviewer remarked there are a couple of parts on the back below the vertical stabilizer (shark fin? whatever...) that want to fall off. That's true. They're two flat wedge-shaped pieces opposite one another, each one held on by a single (what I want to call) "lego stub". I found I had a few extra small bits left over after the build, and one of those was a black part# 4121715, a double-ended stub used typically to fasten two girders together side-to-side. I used that as a sort of stabilizing component to the two wedge-parts on the back, sticking each end into an available receiving hole in each part. They're still pretty shaky, but a little less so now.

Another reviewer noted his #3 instruction book was mis-printed. Mine wasn't, but half the time during my build, I wasn't using the paper books anyway. All of the instruction books for all of the Lego sets like this are available in .pdf format for downloading and displaying on your computer. I put the pdf manuals up on the screen of my 27" iMac and did just fine following that way.

This kit is newly retired, so it's going to become harder to find, and more expensive. (It's already almost $100 more than what I paid.) Now I'll have to go out and get the Super Star Destroyer!

We received this purchase from "School Student Toys" via Amazon order. Upon opening the packing we noted that the product box was well used and worn out. The contents of the box had been spilled out into the packaging. There was also no assembly instruction book. We returned the product as it was clear the contents had been tampered with. Decided to buy product directly from LEGO web site and had no problem with the product received from them.

    Size does matter!

A great set. I had lots of fun building it and I'm in my late twenties. Certainly requires concentration and some skill to assemble and probably not for the under teen age group (as the 16+ indicates). When I got this, I clearly underestimated the size of the final object. There were so many small pieces (2500+ of them) but it was difficult to comprehend the size of the finished shuttle after all these small pieces came together. I got a sense of the scale of this thing after completing the construction of the of the middle wing. And my jaw dropped after I completed the assembly in full. My imagination was 1/3 smaller. The fusion of the ever desirable Lego brand and the timeless epic saga Star Wars comes through in a magnificent size. It's a great collectible for all Lego enthusiasts who are into Star Wars. Probably took about 12-14 hours to assemble with breaks, so I was occupied several evenings.

The pieces do not come in Lego's new numbered packing. So you need ample space to keep the packets separate and frequently the assembly booklet requires you to locate pieces from several packets. That is the tim consuming part but it's all part of the fun.

Get it. You won't regret it. Make sure you know were to store it once assembled though because it is big!

Fantastic! The model took a while to put together. Better to have 2 people putting it together as it is heavy. But once done and sitting on its stand, it looks Beautiful!
